Casino Welcome Bonus Explained
A welcome bonus is the reward a casino gives you for signing up and making your first deposit. It is usually the biggest offer you will get from a casino, which is exactly why it pays to understand it before you claim.
The headline can be misleading. "Up to $3,000 + 600 free spins" sounds like one huge gift, but it is often four separate bonuses that you only get in full if you deposit the maximum each time. This guide shows how welcome bonuses work, how to compare them and which terms to check. For the other offers casinos give, see our overview of casino bonuses.

How a Welcome Bonus Works
Most welcome bonuses are deposit matches. The casino adds a percentage of your deposit as bonus money, up to a maximum amount.
With a 100% match up to $500:
- Deposit $50 and you get $50 bonus, so you play with $100.
- Deposit $500 and you get $500 bonus, so you play with $1,000.
- Deposit $800 and you still get $500, because that is the maximum.
The bonus money cannot be withdrawn straight away. You first need to meet the wagering, for example betting the bonus 35 times. Until then, the bonus and any winnings from it stay locked.
Many casinos now split the offer into a package over your first two to five deposits. Here is a typical example:
| Deposit | Match | Max bonus | Free spins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 100% | $500 | 100 |
| 2nd | 75% | $500 | 50 |
| 3rd | 50% | $500 | 50 |
| Total | 225% | $1,500 | 200 |
To get the full $1,500 you would need to deposit about $2,170 over three deposits. Most players will only use the first step, so judge a package mainly by its first deposit offer.
Types of Welcome Bonuses
Deposit match. The classic offer: a 100% or 200% match on your first deposit. Simple to understand and easy to compare.
Match + free spins. A deposit match with spins on a selected slot. The spins usually arrive in daily batches, for example 20 a day for five days. You can compare these offers on our page about free spins with a deposit.
Welcome package. Several matches spread over your first deposits, often with spins at each step. The total looks large, but each step has its own minimum deposit and deadline.
No deposit welcome bonus. A small bonus or a batch of spins just for registering. The terms are stricter, but you risk nothing. See our list of no deposit free spins.
High roller welcome bonus. A separate offer for big first deposits, with a bigger maximum but often a higher minimum deposit. Read more about bonuses for big depositors.
Comparing Two Welcome Offers
A bigger percentage does not always mean a better bonus. Here are two offers for a $100 deposit:
| Offer A | Offer B | |
|---|---|---|
| Match | 200% up to $200 | 100% up to $200 |
| Bonus on $100 deposit | $200 | $100 |
| Wagering | 50x bonus | 20x bonus |
| Total bets needed | $10,000 | $2,000 |
| Average cost of wagering (4% house edge) | $400 | $80 |
| Expected value | −$200 | +$20 |
Offer A gives twice the bonus, but you would have to bet $10,000 to clear it. On slots with a 4% house edge, that costs $400 on average, which is more than the bonus is worth. Offer B is smaller, but you are more likely to finish the wagering with something left.
The quick rule: multiply the bonus by the wagering, then multiply by the slot's house edge. If the result is higher than the bonus, the offer is mainly extra playing time. Our wagering requirements guide explains the calculation in more detail.
Terms to Check Before You Claim
The welcome bonus terms are usually longer than for any other offer. These are the points that matter most:
- Minimum deposit. Often $10 to $20 for the first step and higher for later ones. Deposit less and you get nothing.
- Wagering on bonus or deposit + bonus. 35x on deposit + bonus is effectively 70x on the bonus alone.
- Win cap. Some welcome bonuses limit withdrawals to 5x or 10x the bonus. Rare on good offers, common on aggressive ones.
- Deadline per step. Each part of a package may expire 7 to 14 days after it is credited.
- Excluded games and payment methods. Check that your favourite slots and your deposit method qualify.
The full list of rules, with examples, is in our guide to bonus terms.
Red flags: wagering above 50x, a win cap on a deposit bonus below 5x, terms that are only available after you register, and no clear licence information on the site.
How to Claim a Welcome Bonus
- Read the terms first. Check the minimum deposit, wagering and eligible payment methods before you register.
- Register. Use your real details, since the casino will verify your identity before your first withdrawal.
- Opt in or enter a code. Some casinos ask you to tick a box or choose the bonus in the cashier. Others need a bonus code entered before the deposit.
- Make your deposit. Deposit at least the minimum with an eligible method.
- Check that the bonus is active. It should appear in your account straight away. If it does not, contact support before you start playing.
- Play within the rules. Keep to the maximum bet and eligible games until the wagering is complete.
Once the welcome offer is used up, many casinos continue with a reload bonus on later deposits.
Welcome Bonus FAQ
- Can I get a welcome bonus more than once? No. A welcome bonus is for new players only, and casinos allow one account per person, household or IP address. Opening a second account usually leads to both being closed.
- Do I have to take the welcome bonus? No. You can usually decline it when you deposit. That makes sense if you want to withdraw quickly or play games that do not count towards wagering.
- Can I withdraw my deposit before finishing the wagering? It depends on the casino. Some let you cancel the bonus and keep your remaining real money, others lock the deposit until the wagering is done. Check this in the terms before you claim.
- Which is better, a high match or low wagering?Low wagering, in most cases. A 100% bonus with 25x wagering is usually worth more than a 300% bonus with 50x.
- Is a welcome bonus worth it?It can be, if the terms are fair and you were planning to deposit anyway. Treat it as extra playing time rather than free money, and always play within your budget.
